Job Duties


Are you looking for an opportunity to implement processes and procedures to keep the state of Virginia safe? We are searching for individuals driven by safety to support state traffic operations.

VDOT’s Richmond District is searching for an individual to provide leadership and support to regional District Traffic Operations using assets, resources, and best business practices to provide a safe and efficient transportation system through the installation, inspection, and maintenance of traffic controls devices (signs, pavement markings and ancillary structures). Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and laws governing traffic operations. Provide services expected to result in a transportation network which moves traffic efficiently, promptly, and safely. Develop and manage workforce development, long-range strategic plans, organizational initiatives, and budgets.

This position will provide leadership to Traffic Operations Maintenace work units. Plan, develop, coordinate, administer and prioritize contracts to accomplish work and to meet required time frames cost limits, and customer expectations. Manage and direct inspection of contract services.

Minimum Qualifications


• Ability to plan, direct, supervise, and evaluate the work of others and the overall program effectiveness through performance measures.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
• Skill in use of computers and software applications.
• Knowledge of materials, equipment and methods related to traffic operations maintenance activities.
• Ability to analyze data, prepare detailed reports, develop and maintain complex inventory of various traffic control devices.
• Knowledge of traffic engineering principles and practices; traffic control device specifications, standards, and policies; signal maintenance and operations.
• Ability to plan, develop, monitor and forecast budgets and short/long term needs.
• Ability to assess traffic engineering issues, make appropriate recommendations to improve safety and traffic low.
• Extensive contract administration experience.
• Knowledge of MUTCD and Virginia Work Area Protection Manual.


Additional Considerations


• Experience managing a large workload and staff required.
• Experience coordinating, planning, and managing emergency response operations related to traffic control devices and ancillary structures on highways and primary route corridors.
• A combination of training, experience or education in traffic engineering, traffic management, or highway design principles desires.
