Job Duties


The Lynchburg District has an exciting career opportunity for an Assistant District Structure & Bridge Engineer for Project Delivery.  VDOT's Lynchburg District is responsible for maintaining approximately 2,000 structures and as the successful candidate, you will assist the District Structure and Bridge Engineer in prioritizing, planning, coordinating and managing work activities related to engineering and design of bridge structures and their maintenance, repair and rehabilitation. Specifically, you will:



  • Train, develop, and supervise engineers performing preliminary and final design/analysis of structures in accordance with state and federal guidelines and VDOT standards.

  • Oversee the design and development of quality plans for bridge construction and bridge maintenance projects prepared by both agency staff and consultants supporting on-time and on-budget business goals. 

  • Provide technical guidance and expertise on structural design issues from the preliminary engineering process through construction.

  • Assist the District Structure and Bridge Engineer with managing the State of Good Repair (SGR) programming of bridge projects into the Six Year Improvement Program (SYIP).

  • Manage the bridge project delivery program by providing the design, plan and construction documents for bridge structures, repairs and rehabilitations, meeting all design and schedule requirements for specific crossings.

• Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to transportation engineering.
• Ability to provide technical direction, guidance and training to others.
• Knowledge of supervisory and human resources practices and principles to include hiring, discipline, performance management and employee development.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences and to make presentations and conduct meetings.
• Knowledge of Transporation engineering principles and practices.
• Ability to manage, coordinate and oversee multiple projects and schedules and multiple engineering disciplines.
• Knowledge of bridge nomenclature, specs, inspection methods, structural analysis, reinforced concrete design, steel design, design procedures, drafting techniques, plan preparation and estimating.
• Skilled in project scheduling and project management.
• Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources and leadership techniques.
• Knowledge of engineering principles, practices and procedures as applied to bridges and structures.
• Ability to supervise staff, programs and budgets.
• Ability to interpret and apply engineering practices and procedures to a variety of complex structural engineering projects, draw logical conclusions and exercise sound engineering judgment.
• Skill in the use of bridge design software programs and CADD.
• Ability to research and analyze data to provide recommendations and solutions to problems.
• Skill in the use of computers and web-based applications to include engineering software.


Minimum Qualifications


• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences and to make presentations and conduct meetings.
• Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or related field.
• Knowledge of structural analysis, reinforced concrete design, steel design, design procedures, drafting techniques, plan preparation and estimating.
• Valid Professional Engineer's license.
• Knowledge of bridge nomenclature, specifications and inspection methods.
• Skill in the use of computers and web based applications to include bridge design programs and CADD.
• Ability to manage, coordinate and oversee multiple projects and schedules and multiple engineering disciplines.
• Knowledge of engineering principles, practices and procedures as applied to bridges and structures.
• Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources and leadership techniques.
• Ability to interpret and apply engineering practices and procedures to a variety of complex structural engineering projects, draw logical conclusions and exercise sound engineering judgment.
• Ability to supervise staff, programs and budgets.


Additional Considerations


• Progressively responsible experience in bridge design, engineering, structural analysis, and preparation of plans and contract documents for the construction, repair, and rehabilitation of bridge structures.
• Practical knowledge of LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and bridge design experience governed by the specification.
• Experience in bridge construction and repair methods, procedures and techniques. Experience reading and interpreting plans, specifications and contracts.
• Experience managing personnel and consultant agreements.
• Progressively responsible experience in project management and development procedures.
