Job Duties
Seeking to fill an Operator, Bridge Tunnel for the 24/7 tunnel operations which includes the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) and Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel (MMMBT). In this role, you will perform a variety of tasks related to directing and controlling traffic in a tunnel or bridge facility to include safety and security measures and maximize safety of public roads through proper traffic control in routine and emergency operations.
This position is designated as essential and is required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required. In addition, the successful candidates will be required to be available to work shift schedules to include: flexible hours, days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
Core Responsibilities include:
• Monitor and Inspect Vehicles – Monitor and inspect vehicles entering facilities. Prevent unauthorized pedestrians and vehicles from entering facilities.
• Direct Traffic and Vehicles – Direct and control traffic throughout the facility. Observe and report all unusual occurrences.
• Emergency Operations and Safety – Assist state and local police, fire and rescue units and maintenance personnel in emergencies and routine operations. Use safety equipment, techniques and skills such as CPR, first aid, etc. Check ID cards, issue visitor passes at checkpoints and remain alert and observant to provide security to the facility. Report all suspicious activities or events to Control Room.
• Patrol and Inspect Facility – Perform inspections of assigned work areas to include buildings, facilities, equipment, etc. Perform daily housekeeping duties to provide a safe, clean work environment Maintain a professional demeanor and uniform appearance. Maintain high visibility during peak traffic. Maintain daily log, reporting and documenting all incidents and discrepancies.

• Experience working in or around heavy traffic.
