Job Description Job Description

The Take-Off Engineer is a key member of Ghilotti Bros., Inc.'s Estimating team, partnering closely with Estimators to develop accurate and competitive bids for heavy civil construction projects. This role is ideal for someone with prior heavy civil construction experience who understands how projects are built and can confidently interpret plans, specifications, and project requirements from day one.

With more than 100 projects bid each year, you'll become part of a high-performing estimating team responsible for delivering proposals on some of the Bay Area's most significant infrastructure projects. While we'll train you on our internal processes, software, and estimating methods, we're looking for someone who already has a solid understanding of heavy civil construction and can quickly contribute to our fast-paced environment.

Since 1914, Ghilotti Bros., Inc. has built its reputation on delivering exceptional projects while treating employees, customers, and communities with integrity and respect. Our Estimating team works closely with Project Management, Operations, and Executive Leadership to help secure the work that drives our company's continued success.

If you enjoy solving complex construction challenges, thrive in a collaborative environment, and want to be part of a company where your work directly impacts every project we build, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Do

  • Interpret construction plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents for heavy civil construction projects, including roadways, highways, bridges, grading, underground utilities, and site development.
  • Perform accurate quantity takeoffs for earthwork, paving, utilities, structural components, and other project scopes.
  • Prepare detailed quantity reports and supporting documentation for estimating teams.
  • Collaborate with Estimators to identify project risks, construction sequencing, traffic control requirements, and other project-specific considerations.
  • Organize electronic bid documents and maintain estimating files.
  • Assist with subcontractor and supplier outreach, quote solicitation, and bid-day activities as needed.
  • Support continuous improvement of estimating processes and quantity tracking.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience working on heavy civil construction projects, preferably in estimating, project engineering, field engineering, project management, or a related role.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Strong understanding of how heavy civil projects are planned and constructed, including grading, paving, underground utilities, and roadway infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Major plus

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience using AGTEK, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, or similar construction software.

Don't have experience with our specific software? That's okay. We'll provide training on the tools we use. What matters most is that you understand heavy civil construction, know how to interpret project documents, and can apply that knowledge to producing accurate quantity takeoffs.
