Job Duties


The Lynchburg District is seeking to fill a Construction Inspector Apprentice position in Chatham.

This position, in a training capacity, will inspect phases of highway construction and maintenance projects in order to prepare to assume the duties of a construction inspector and provide a quality transportation system for the traveling public.

Apprentice will be exposed to the Road and Bridge Building Construction Industry. The selected candidate will perform daily assigned inspection tasks to prepare to assume the duties of an inspector. This includes following a plan of on-the-job and classroom training to include plan reading, surveying, structure and bridge construction inspection, work zone traffic control, asphalt pavement maintenance and resurfacing. Inspectors measure, test, and check materials, methods, and installations to ensure conformance by the contractor with plans, specifications, and contract documents. Inspectors document contractor progress on a daily basis, input data into automated software systems, and generate reports and correspondence. All inspection is performed on VDOT roadway construction and maintenance projects. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date.

TRAINING PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS: Candidates must be able to obtain certifications in Asphalt Field, American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field – Level 1, Soils & Aggregate Field, Nuclear Gauge Safety and Transportation, Pavement Markings, Guardrail Installation, OSHA Safety, Work Zone Traffic Control (intermediate level), Erosion and Sediment Control for Inspectors, as well as, fall protection and confined space training.


Minimum Qualifications


• Valid driver's license.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Basic knowledge and understanding of highway construction and contracting.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret construction plans, specifications and contract documents.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to obtain required certifications within 24 months.
• Knowledge in mathematics, e.g. geometry and trigonometry.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in field conditions such as using testing equipment, lifting, climbing, stooping, working at heights, in confined spaces and making visual observations.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with various stakeholders, e.g. contractors, general public, internal and external government agencies.


Additional Considerations


A combination of training, experience, or education in Construction, Engineering Technology, Project Management, Materials Handling or related field desired.

Valid driver’s license and safety footwear. Will be required to work outside normal work hours to observe contractor progress, as well as, during emergencies, inclement weather and in heavy traffic conditions. A fingerprint based criminal history records check and DMV driving check will be required. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
