Job Duties


Are you driven by innovation, with a passion for traffic design and operations? We are looking for professionals with Traffic Engineering interest to support the Virginia Department of Transportation in constructing new roadway designs to keep Virginia safe and moving!

In this role you will serve as the District Traffic Engineer by providing strategic leadership, management and direction to the Bristol District Traffic Engineering Section. You will direct traffic engineering studies, plan reviews, project management, land development support, and data collection. This position will address roadway safety and operational problems for all modes of travel through a process of conducting traffic engineering studies analyses, establish District Traffic Program priorities including developing inventories for traffic assets. You will provide PE signatory authority for the design and installation of all traffic control devices on the roadway system. You may also provide strategic leadership, management, and direction to Traffic Control Device Maintenance forces to include inspection, condition assessment, maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic control devices.

Minimum Qualifications


• Experience related to computer simulation, analysis and design software packages to solve
traffic operational and safety problems.
• Valid driver's license.
• Knowledge of supervisory, leadership and management practices and principles to include
hiring, discipline, performance management, and employee development.
• Knowledge of materials, equipment and methods related to traffic engineering maintenance
activities.
• Experience applying traffic engineering and maintenance principles and practices to solve
complex traffic problems.
• Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Valid Professional Engineer's license.
• Experience managing and providing strategic leadership to a traffic program and the ability
to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
• Experience in a leadership role with citizens, elected officials, the media and other
organizations on traffic engineering issues and experience in handling large scale projects.
• Experience developing and managing budgets and contracts.
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations, design standards and specifications related to
traffic engineering.


Additional Considerations


• Significant project management and strategic planning experience in Traffic Engineering.
• Progressively responsible experience managing traffic engineering operations within an
organization.
• Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
