Job Duties
We're hiring licensed commercial drivers (CDL). Put your CDL and Equipment Operator skills to work! VDOT’s Lexington Residency is seeking to fill multiple equipment operators in Rockbridge county. Operators must have the capability to report for emergency operations within a reasonable time frame and work 12-hour shifts during 24-hour emergency operations conditions.
These positions are classified as Wage (hourly) and no state benefits are provided. Positions are temporary and will be utilized for emergency situations generally between November and May.
These emergency Medium & Heavy Duty Equipment Operators (CDL holders) stand-by for “call-in” seasonal work to supplement advance storm preparation and snow removal activities, as required. During inclement weather, you will operate and maintain roadway equipment (such as dump trucks, front end loaders, and tractors), to clear snow and ice from roadways; apply abrasives and chemicals on road surfaces; and perform heavy manual labor such as installing tire chains, plows and blades, and performing debris removal. Position may also be called in to respond during other types of weather emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (minimum Class B) required for role.
• Candidates should be skilled in operating medium and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, motor graders.
• Must be able to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Must be able to work call-out during day or night shifts to support emergency operations.
• Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Additional Considerations
• Experience performing snow removal operations, especially using single/tandem axle/dump truck, motor grader, backhoe, tractor, front end loader, etc.
• Experience performing preventative maintenance on diverse equipment.
• Experience working 12 hour shifts, night and/or day, when necessary.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
