VDOT’s Central Office Structure and Bridge Division is excited to announce we are seeking an Engineer to join our team. The selected candidate will be responsible for:

• Teamwork and Customer Service: Demonstrating customer service and work habits that reflect the VDOT Values and coordinating the flow of information both orally and in writing.
• Analysis and Technical Reporting: Analyzing and interpreting engineering data and information. Preparing complete, clear, and concise reports and recommendations.
• Technical Guidance and Support: Providing technical guidance and support related to bridge construction activities, issues, and problems. Developing effective and economical recommendations to respond to construction problems and other bridge-related inquiries. Documenting all occurrences for future reference. Participating in meetings to ensure bridge-related issues are presented.
• Manage Assigned Activities: Planning, scheduling, and coordinating engineering program activities such that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline.
• Design, Analyze and Check Structural Elements: Preparing effective preliminary and final bridge and structure designs for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects, ensuring compliance with AASHTO and VDOT specifications. Preparing bridge plans, sketches, and structural drawings. Checking structural plans prepared by others to ensure accuracy and completeness. Ensuring shop plans meet AASHTO and VDOT specifications, are geometrically correct and meet requirements of project design plans. Investigating condition of existing structures and assist in developing scope of proposed bridge rehabilitations. Analyzing structures for safe load carrying capacity and perform structural calculations to ensure soundness and compliance of structural elements.
• Special Assignments: Managing special program initiatives and projects as assigned. Serving and representing VDOT or assigned program area on various committees and work groups.
• Engineering Process Management: Using established VDOT policies and procedures in the development and delivery of engineering projects. Engineering projects are completed in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
• Communication: Establishing an effective line of communication between VDOT, contractors, government agencies and the public. Investigating issues and resolve complaints.
• Project Engineering: Assisting in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports. Complete multiple concurrent tasks and assignments, and report updates on their status.



Minimum Qualifications


• Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include automated engineering and design software.
• Experience in structural steel design, reinforced and prestressed concrete design and soil mechanics.
• Ability to produce structural design plans and notes.
• Experience applying specifications, codes and regulations related to structural design (e.g. AASHTO and LRFD structural design standards).
• Experience applying civil engineering principles and practices related to structural engineering to include strength of materials, statics, and structural analysis.
• Ability to review and administer consultant design contracts.
• Ability to interpret construction plans and design specifications.
• Ability to draw rational conclusions and develop solutions from analysis; make independent decisions; and manage multiple assignments.


 


Additional Considerations


• Experience in the design and analysis of bridges and structures.
• A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer's (PE) license.
• Experience using AASHTO's LRFD design specifications.
• Experience using structural design software, including Open Bridge Designer, MerlinDash, Descus, Larsa4D, STAAD and/or load rating software, including Br|R.
• Experience using Microstation/OBD.

VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.
