Job Duties

The selected candidate would perform materials sampling and testing on projects and in the laboratory. Perform inspections at plants and on projects. Compile and maintain test results and report findings. Maintain and operate testing equipment. Provide technical assistance to projects.

• Skill in preparing samples and performing laboratory tests.

• Ability to perform mathematical calculations and apply statistical concepts in sampling and testing of materials.

• Considerable knowledge of materials test methods and procedures.

• Ability to obtain required materials certifications within 12 months of employment.

• Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare technical reports.

• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

• Ability to work in the area of low-level ionizing radiation.

• Ability to interpret plans, specifications and contracts.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inspection staff, consultants, contractors and VDOT management.

• Considerable knowledge of quality control and quality assurance concepts and practices.

• Considerable knowledge of plant and field quality assurance sampling and testing methods, frequencies, and procedures.

• Considerable knowledge of highway construction and maintenance materials.

• Ability to prepare or review technical reports.

• Considerable knowledge of highway construction methods, procedures and practices.

• Skill in interpreting plans, drawings, manuals, VTM/ASTM/AASHTO test methods, and VDOT specifications.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.

• Ability to work independently and in teams, including industry and management.

• Ability to train technicians and others.

• Skill in collecting, organizing, analyzing, and maintaining data.

• Knowledge of AASHTO laboratory accreditation requirements.


Minimum Qualifications


• Considerable knowledge of quality control, quality assurance concepts and practices.

• Ability to obtain required materials certifications within 12 months of employment.

• Considerable knowledge of materials test methods and procedures.

• Ability to work in the area of low-level ionizing radiation.

• Considerable knowledge of plant and field quality assurance sampling and testing methods, frequencies, and procedures.

Additional Considerations


• A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering Technology, or related field desired.

• Current possession of required materials certifications.

• Experience reflecting skill in interpreting plans, drawings, manuals, test methods, and specifications.

• Experience reflecting considerable knowledge of materials quality control and quality assurance practices.

• Several years' experience in materials testing, construction, maintenance or a related field desired.
