Job Duties


Seeking qualified mechanic to diagnose and repair a wide range of highway construction and maintenance equipment and vehicles, perform preventive maintenance and state inspections, and weld and fabricate parts. Will use computerized and hand-held diagnostic equipment and manuals, as well as hand and power tools of the trade. Will complete training and recordkeeping requirements. Will work outside normal hours during emergencies to include nights, weekends, and holidays. Additional positions may be filled from this applicant pool within 90 days of the closing date.

In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.


Minimum Qualifications


Knowledge of effective diagnostic and repair techniques and procedures for a variety of motorized equipment to include gas and diesel engines. Knowledge of general shop practices and welding/fabrication. Ability to diagnose equipment failures and perform repairs. Ability to read and comprehend technical repair manuals, perform mathematical calculations and read gauges and testing devices. Ability to complete and maintain accurate records and reports. Ability to perform heavy manual labor, operate various types of equipment, and provide technical guidance to others. Skill in the use of advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment and hand/power tools. Skill in the use of computers and software programs.


Additional Considerations


Possession of commercial driver’s license and state inspection license. High school, trade school or combination of training and experience in diagnostics, repair and maintenance of automotive, medium/heavy duty trucks, and construction equipment. ASE certifications a plus.

Requires a valid driver’s license and approved safety shoes. Must be able to obtain Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and DOT medical card within 3 months of employment and state inspection license within 6 months of employment. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Satisfactory results from a fingerprint-based criminal history records check, pre-employment physical and drug screen will be required. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies and inclement weather. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
