Job Duties


The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Staunton District, is seeking an Equipment Section Manager to provide leadership and oversight for the development and implementation of the District’s Equipment Programs that support District and Agency goals. As the successful candidate you will:


• Oversee and implement improvements of cost-effective, customer responsive programs for the acquisition, maintenance, repair, and utilization of vehicles and equipment and ancillary services.
• Assess needs, plan, develop performance goals, monitor and evaluate performance and develop and implement district-wide programs, policies, and procedures for equipment assignment, funding, acquisition, operations, maintenance, utilization, and disposal for equipment ranging from small light-duty vehicles to large construction equipment.
• Advise district and residency managers on equipment program direction and issues. Serve as the designated District Transportation Officer and participate in strategic planning and statewide program development as a member of VDOT's statewide Equipment Program Strategic Planning Team.


Minimum Qualifications


• Knowledge of fleet management industry best practices, fuel facility management, related environmental and DOT rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of equipment repair practices, safety and accident prevention strategies.
• Skill in the use of computers, software applications to include databases, spreadsheets, and graphics.
• Knowledge of equipment inventory procedures and practices.
• Ability to gather, analyze data and create technical reports.
• Ability to understand, interpret equipment specifications, the relevance of individual equipment types for overall fleet management and performance.
• Knowledge of financial, budgetary, administrative, and business processes used to manage large scale fleet operations.
• Ability to identify, develop improvements in fleet management business processes and service levels.
• Supervisory experience applying knowledge of human resources practices, principles to include hiring, discipline, performance management and employee development.


Additional Considerations


• A combination of training, experience, or education in Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration or related field desired.
• Experience in equipment fleet management and supervision of equipment personnel and operations.
• Certified Professional Fleet Manager certification.
