Job Duties


Maintenance Operators set up work zones, cut brush, clean ditches and pipes, repair roadways, plow snow, and perform preventive maintenance and on equipment and power tools. Performs emergency roadway operations as an essential employee during snow/severe weather and other emergency events. Must be willing to work outside of normal work hours during emergency conditions.

Core responsibilities include:
Equipment Operations – Operate light, medium and heavy-duty equipment safely to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.

Job Safety – Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.

Emergency Operations – Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.

Preventative Maintenance – Perform maintenance repair, replacement and preventive maintenance. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.

Manual Labor – Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks as needed for project completion.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. Locations included in the Williamsburg Residency are Williamsburg, Seaford, Surry and Croaker Area Headquarters.


Minimum Qualifications


Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Ability to operate and maintain equipment comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing. Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of handheld and power tools. Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. Ability to work inclement weather, accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Safety shoes required.


Additional Considerations


Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements. Experience performing heavy manual labor and equipment operation such as dump trucks, tractors, loaders, etc.). Experience performing basic preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs. Familiarity with methods and materials used in highway maintenance. Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up. High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education. Flagging certification.
