This job requires reporting directly to major incidents on Interstates in real-time and overseeing the scene through emergency services and VDOT staff communications.  The position would be responsible for associated clean-up required to reopen the roadway.  Lastly, they would lend their expertise in incident management emergency responders meetings to optimizing actions in emergency situations to best safeguard the traveling public. Timely reporting to the scene is a must and ability to work remotely is not an option.


VDOT is an emergency response agency, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations when services are needed. 


This is an hourly/wage position, limited to 1500 hours per cycle year with an average of 29 hrs per week. No State/Medical benefits provided.


Job Duties


VDOT's Staunton District Lexington Residency is seeking an Incident Management Coordinator/Contract Monitor (WAGE/HOURLY). As the qualified candidate you will:



  • Plan, execute and continually review incident and emergency management operations.

  • Assist residency management and Regional Incident Coordinator with Area and Regional Management Committees.

  • Coordinate and cooperate with emergency service and incident management organizations at local, regional, state and multi state levels.

  • Assist in the preparation of incident and emergency response plans and conduct necessary training.

  • Responsible for traffic management planning for emergency operations and special events.


This position is deemed essential and is expected to assist during major emergencies. Incumbent will coordinate closely with and assist the Transportation Operations Manager with operations oversight during emergency situations. The Incident Management Coordinator will also represent the region incident management program at various conferences, meetings and workshops.

Minimum Qualifications


• Ability to communicate effectively orally in writing.
• Ability to effectively problem solve and apply critical thinking to traffic operations incidents.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to work, make sound decisions during emergency situations and, or for time sensitive situations.
• Experience reflecting the ability to plan and schedule 24-hour public service operations.
• Experience working independently, cooperatively with others, building consensus and promoting open communications.
• Ability to report to incident scenes with exposure to live traffic conditions i.e., noise, fumes, dust, gases, chemicals etc. and encounter unexpected safety hazards.
• Ability to walk or stand on uneven terrain or surfaces to review incident and, or accident scenes.
• Experience reflecting knowledge of public safety operations, emergency response and coordination relating to highway incidents.
• Experience reflecting the ability to apply National Incident Management principles and practices to a variety of events.


Additional Considerations


• A combination of training, experience, or education in Incident Management, Emergency Management, Transportation Management or related field desired.
• Experience in incident, emergency and special event operations.
• Training in transportation incident and special events.
• Experience in leading 24-hour emergency operations.
• Experience and training in safety and work zone management.
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations and procedures related to incident management.
• Knowledge and experience in transportation operations.
• Experience in real time emergency operations, incident management, traffic management and public safety agency coordination and communications.
