Job Duties


VDOT is seeking applicants for the position of Structure and Bridge Inspector in the
Salem District. The candidate will work as a member of an inspection team responsible
for performing visual and mechanical inspections of bridges, culverts, traffic control
devices, and other structures; preparing inspection reports and detailed drawings of
conditions; recommending repair and structural replacements; providing cost estimates of recommendations; compiling information and updating computerized structure
inventory records.


Minimum Qualifications


*Working knowledge of structure maintenance, construction and repair procedures; of drafting
techniques and technical math; and of microcomputers, including the ability to perform data
entry.
*Ability to diagnose the causes of damage and deterioration to structures
*Ability to read and interpret road and bridge plans and agency guidelines
*Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles
*Ability to create and maintain accurate, detailed records (manually and electronically)
*Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers
*Ability to prepare detailed sketches
*Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in extreme temperatures, at great heights, in confined
spaces, over water and/or in close proximity to traffic.
*Ability to skillfully use inspection testing equipment.
*High school graduate or equivalent work experience to prepare one to succeed in this role.
*Ability to successfully complete NHI bridge inspection coursework and training within 36
months of employment.


Additional Considerations


*Working knowledge and experience in bridge inspection methods and of deterioration
characteristics of steel, concrete and timber
*Working knowledge of common bridge types and nomenclature
*National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) certification or
completion of National Highway Institute Inspection of In-Service Bridges training course
*Knowledge of statics, strength of materials, and structural analysis.
