The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is excited to announce an opportunity to serve as an IT GIS Support Coordinator in our Information Technology Division. The IT GIS Support Coordinator is responsible for providing technical support and assistance for GIS systems within the IT department. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of GIS principles and technologies, proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS or ArcGIS Online, and excellent problem-solving and communication skills. They should also have knowledge in GIS data management and analysis techniques. This position is located in Richmond, Virginia.
In this role as an IT GIS Support Coordinator, you will troubleshoot technical issues, and provide timely resolution to ensure the smooth operation of GIS systems. With a focus on user satisfaction and system efficiency, you’ll play a key role in ensuring that GIS technology meets the needs of the organization.
This position’s specific responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to:
Python Scripting: Develop and maintain Python scripts for automating GIS workflows, data processing, and geoprocessing tasks.
Web Development: Design, develop, and maintain web-based GIS applications, interactive maps, and spatial data visualization tools using web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and various GIS APIs (e.g., ArcGIS JavaScript API).
Mobile Development: Create mobile GIS applications and tools for data collection, field mapping, and asset management using platforms like Esri's ArcGIS Runtime SDKs, or other relevant mobile development frameworks.
GIS Analysis: Conduct spatial analysis, geospatial modeling, and data manipulation using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) to support project objectives.
Database Management: Manage spatial databases, including data storage, organization, and retrieval, utilizing databases like PostgreSQL/PostGIS or SQL Server Spatial.
System Integration: Integrate GIS solutions with other systems and applications within the organization's IT infrastructure, ensuring seamless data exchange and interoperability.
Project Support: Collaborate with project teams to understand GIS requirements, provide technical expertise, and contribute to the successful implementation and completion of GIS-related projects.
Research and Innovation: Stay updated on emerging GIS technologies, trends, and methodologies, and explore innovative approaches to enhance GIS capabilities and address business challenges.
Documentation and Reporting: Document GIS workflows, procedures, and project deliverables, and prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations as required.

VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.
Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth telework policy.
VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
