The Fredericksburg Residency is seeking a highly skilled individual to lead its Specialty Crew in addressing time-consuming customer-focused roadway maintenance and construction tasks. The Crew Leader will plan work schedules and identify/assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the job.

As a specialty crew leader, you will:
• Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques; ensure crew has proper PPE
• Train crews in proper safety methods
• Apply VAWAPM (Virginia Work Area Protection Manul) for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc.
• Take corrective action when unsafe conditions are identified
• Provide traffic control in support of maintenance operation
• Conduct on-the-job training and recommend additional training needs to Superintendent.
• Demonstrate considerable skill and expertise as an operator in the proper/safe use and maintenance of all equipment
• Perform snow and ice removal and other emergency response activities

VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

NOTE: This position requires approved safety shoes. Preference will be given to current CDL carriers.


Minimum Qualifications


• Valid driver’s license
• Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction practices and procedures
• Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs related to roadway construction and maintenance
• Basic knowledge of inventory procedures
• Skill in operating and maintaining light and medium trucks and equipment
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Ability to lead, direct and train others to perform manual labor and use hand and power tools
• Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals
• Ability to complete reports and keep records
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment
• Flagging Certification

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
