Job Duties


Candidates must have a minimum of a Commercial Learners Permit prior to being hired. Preference will be given to candidates who already have a current CDL.

Seeking first-line supervisor to provide day-to-day supervision to work crews performing maintenance and construction activities and to help develop schedules, budgets, and work priorities. Will assist in the management of the area's safety program and emergency operations, develop and monitor individual training programs, monitor inventory levels and complete required paperwork. Will provide oversight for contract crews as needed. Position is designated as essential in emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal hours during emergencies to include nights, weekends and holidays. Additional vacancies may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date in the Appomattox Residency.


Minimum Qualifications


Considerable knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction practices and procedures. Knowledge of inventory practices and procedures. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs related to roadway construction and maintenance. Ability to direct, evaluate and train others. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to communicate effectively and interact successfully with co-workers, managers and internal and external customers. Skill in operating and maintaining light to heavy trucks and equipment. Skill in the use of computers and software applications.


Additional Considerations


Ability to gather data, conduct research and create reports. Experience supervising others and evaluating performance. Experience planning schedules and assigning manpower. Inventory management experience. Experience overseeing emergency operations including snow removal, storm damage and accident clean-up. Erosion and sediment control certification. Possession of valid CDL.

Valid driver’s license and safety shoes required. Must be able to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to the outdoors, weather in all seasons, animals and insects. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Must be able to obtain First Aid, CPR, erosion and sediment control, work zone safety and flagger certifications. Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving record will be verified prior to employment. Selected applicant must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Requires approved safety shoes. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies and inclement weather to include nights, weekends and holidays. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
