Job Description
OVERVIEW
The Mechanic positions primarily serve the Highway, Parks and Recreation, and Transfer Station work areas of the Public Works Department, but also maintain the fleet for other Town Departments (Assessing, Fire, Police, etc.).
These positions are also eligible for additional pay to perform the duties of the Safety Coordinator and Assistant Safety Coordinator roles as outlined herein.
This position is subject to the random drug and alcohol testing program implemented by the Town. Employees are expected to abide by all safety policies, procedures and programs; and to perform work at the direction of their immediate supervisor.
RESPONSIBLE TO:
The Mechanic position is directly responsible to the Highway Foreman > Highway Superintendent > Public Works Director.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:
The primary responsibility of the Mechanic is to maintain and repair all Public Works Department equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pick-up truck and all manner of public works vehicles and equipment.
Vehicle and equipment diagnostic and repair tools.
Welding gases and tools.

SAFETY CULTURE
In order to foster a “safety culture” within the Public Works Department where all employees are aware and safety conscious, two new roles are being offered to Highway and Transfer Station employees. The goal is to develop safety-oriented mindset, skills and knowledge amongst all employees within the public works department and as such, all employees will have the opportunity to perform the Safety Coordinator and Assistant Safety Coordinator Roles.
The Safety Coordinator is responsible to the Highway Superintendent and Public Works Director. The Assistant Safety Coordinator is responsible to the Highway Superintendent and Public Works Director.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
During snow operations, the employee is required to handle long work hours with limited time off.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disability to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is often loud.
