Job Duties



NOVA VDOT is seeking an experienced Equipment Repair Mechanic for our Alexandria location.

Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but may not be limited to:

Diagnosis and Repair – Diagnose vehicle and equipment failures using electronic testing equipment, service and equipment repair manuals and on-line resources. Perform repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles, equipment and tools to include engines, transmissions, driveline components, electrical and computer systems, fuel injection systems, air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic components and air brakes. Recommend outsourcing for major repairs when needed.

Virginia State Inspections – Perform safety inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police Inspection program for vehicles and equipment.

Preventive Maintenance – Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment according to PM schedule and guidelines. Make repairs as needed when deficiencies are found and, or recommend outsourcing.

Welding Repair and Fabrication – Design, fabricate, modify, and weld components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts.

Emergency Operations – Prepare equipment for emergency operations. Make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations to include on-the-road repairs.

Information Processing and Reporting – Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate, complete and closeout work orders in computer system. Perform time and leave entry. Prepare parts requests. Complete paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs.

Minimum Qualifications


Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.

Knowledge of cutting, welding, and fabrication operations.

Ability to operate various types of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks; equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.

Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.

Ability to read and comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 30 lbs.

Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.

Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.

Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

Ability to obtain State Inspection License within 12 months of employment.

Safety shoes required (please see note under Special Requirements).


Additional Considerations


ASE and welding certifications.

Current State Vehicle Inspection License.

Current CDL or CDL Learner’s Permit at time of hire preferred.

Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Approved Safety Shoes are required. There is an opportunity for reimbursement.

CDL must be attained within 11 months of employment, and State Vehicle Inspection License within 12 months of employment.

Valid Driver’s License. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records check will be conducted.

Candidates may also be required to complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen.

This position is designated as essential and as such, all duties associated with this position are required during emergency situations, which may include, but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations, at times outside of normal working hours. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required.
