Job Duties
As a Maintenance Operator, your duties will be:
• Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions.
• Attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control.
• Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely.
• Participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects.
• Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations. All employees are required to work in emergency situations, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs.
This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to operate and maintain equipment comparable that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
• Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of handheld and power tools.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to read, communicate, and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Considerations
• Valid CDL or CDL Permit.
• Experience performing heavy manual labor and equipment operation.
• Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
• Familiarity with methods and materials used in highway maintenance.
• Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up.
• A combination of training, experience, and/or education which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
