Job Duties

VDOT's Staunton District is seeking a highly qualified Structure and Bridge Operator for its Verona location. As the successful candidate, you will

• Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives to include operating light/medium/heavy equipment and performing manual labor tasks to assist the team in accomplishing construction, repair and maintenance of timber, steel and concrete bridge elements and other structures.

• Perform emergency operations by clearing roadways of snow, ice/debris, and clean up after accidents and providing traffic control.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing.
• Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
• Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
• Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements
• Experience fabricating or welding steel components
