We are welcoming applicants to apply for our Transportation Operator II/Operator Traffic position located in the Bristol District. We are hiring for positions in Bristol and Wise.

The Bristol VDOT Traffic Team is seeking a safety conscious individual to work on installing new and maintaining existing pavement markings, signs, and other traffic control devices in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), VA Work Area Protection Manual, and Road/ Bridge specifications.

Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:

Operate specialized, complex, medium- and heavy-duty equipment to install and maintain longitudinal pavement markings, messages, and other related traffic control devices.

Perform preventative maintenance on pavement marking equipment and assist the Signs Unit with overhead/ground mounted signs as needed. Interpret roadway plans and sketches for new pavement marking installation.

Prepare and maintain documentation of daily activities.

Oversee contractor personnel as needed to ensure that longitudinal pavement markings, messages, and other related traffic control devices are installed correctly and per contract requirements.


Minimum Qualifications


Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.
Experience performing heavy manual labor.
Ability to read and interpret plans and sketches.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate work documentation.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor including standing, bending and frequently lifting up to 50 lbs.
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialty equipment and complex machinery used in pavement marking and messaging.
Skill in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
Safety shoes required.


Additional Considerations


Experience in pavement marking and messaging operations.
Experience in emergency operations to include snow and ice removal, storms and debris clean-up.
Experience in the installation and maintenance of various types of traffic control devices.
Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements or CDL Permit.
Valid Flagger Certification, First Aid/CPR
Certification and Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Training preferred.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022,new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA-approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training.
VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, terrain and standing for long periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. DOT-required medical exam and drug screen for CDL drivers. Safety shoes are required.

Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays for routine and emergency operations, under heavy and close to high-speed traffic conditions, and in varied weather conditions to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
