Summary

The Project Safety Director is expected to be the primary safety technical and leadership resource for a large multiyear data center project. The Project Safety Director will lead, direct and implement Mortenson’s safety program for a single, long-term, large scale data center project that often includes a large concentration of multiple sub-contractor craftworkers on the job site at the same or overlapping timelines over an extended period of time over the duration of the project.  Projects that could qualify for a Project Safety Director would have project annual revenues in excess of $300m and/or a workforce approaching or exceeding 1,000 craftworkers.



 


 


Responsibilities:

Proactively lead, plan and implement the Company’s Zero Injury Safety Program to ensure a safe, healthy and accident free work environment. Including leadership and safety program implementation across multiple different organizations – such as joint-venture construction projects.



  • Direct project team with the site-specific safety program and Zero Injury Manual Policy language

  • Conduct and review site hazard assessments with project management team during planning and construction phase


Act as a resource and provide technical assistance to the Project Team, and onsite Safety Engineers



  • Provide management and oversight to project Safety Engineers and collective project safety team

  • Prepare for onsite activities through safety submittal reviews and participation in preconstruction and preparatory meetings

  • Monitor onsite construction activities through audits and observations

  • Interface with trade partner leadership, client safety personnel, project leadership, union representatives, OSHA and industry groups as needed


Develop, implement, and lead company and project training, and orientation



  • Recognize and develop new training as needed for project and leadership support

  • Ensure the delivery of project safety training

  • Assist with operating group or company training needs as requested


Conduct project loss control data/documentation collection



  • Develop loss trend analysis reports

  • Establish project platform for regular communication of loss control information with essential parties

  • Manage project return to work, modified duty, and OCIP programs, as applicable


Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels


Lead team members by example, offer effective coaching and feedback, and effectively manage performance



 


Qualifications:


  • Minimum eight years of experience in a construction safety role or equivalent related experience

  • Previous experience managing a zero-injury safety program a plus)

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred

  • Current driver’s license

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to work effectively with a broad range of individuals, from craft worker to senior management

  • Commitment and passion for the Zero Injuries Philosophy, and the ability to integrate safety and operations

  • Strong teamwork orientation

  • Positive attitude, professional customer service skills, and strong detail-orientation

  • Active listening skills and effective communication including an openness to diverse input and feedback

  • Ability to travel up to 100%

Education:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, or related field

  • If bachelor’s degree and experience requirements are not met, high school diploma required plus CHST Certification, OSHA 500 designation, and a minimum of 14 years of continuous construction experience leading crews and planning work (including at least 8 years as a dedicated construction safety professional responsible for managing large project and/or multi-project safety programs, conducting/reviewing hazard analyses and developing controls, conducting safety training, and working with project teams and leadership to plan work activities) and previous experience working on very large, complex projects with a high volume of sub-contractor workers and managing a team of safety professionals
