VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Construction Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Senior Construction Inspector vacancy. This position independently coordinates, schedules and inspects all phases of routine and complex highway construction projects to ensure construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications, and provide a quality transportation system for the traveling public. This position will either report to the Saluda Residency or the Northern Neck Residency.

Required skills for job & position:
• Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in field conditions such as using test equipment, lifting, climbing, stooping, working at heights, in confined spaces and making visual observations
• Ability to provide work direction to others on construction projects
• Ability to work independently
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments to construction plans
• Considerable knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology
• Considerable knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO and DBE guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public
• Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files
• Ability to work in the vicinity and operate devices utilizing low-level ionizing radiation
• Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment


 


Minimum Qualifications


• Experience with construction methods, materials, equipment, standards, specifications and terminology
• Experience applying state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO and DBE guidelines and regulations related to transportation construction
• Ability to record and maintain detailed project documentation and prepare reports, forms and correspondence
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, construction contracts and other project management documents
• Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, as well as computers and software applications
• Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry and ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments to construction plans
• Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment
• Ability to work independently and oversee and provide technical guidance and training to other inspectors
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel 5 and the general public

This position is classified as designated to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
