Job Description Job Description
We are looking for a true Senior Estimator to lead our earthwork and heavy civil estimating efforts. The ideal candidate has proven experience estimating large-scale excavation projects and understands how the work is actually built in the field.
This role is not limited to producing estimates. The Senior Estimator will help evaluate incoming ITBs/RFPs, decide which opportunities are worth pursuing, assign bid priorities to the estimating team, and lead the excavation estimating process from initial review through final proposal. This person must be able to manage a high volume of bid opportunities while maintaining accuracy, discipline, and accountability across the team.
The Senior Estimator is responsible for developing complete, accurate estimates covering scope, schedule, cost, risk, and execution approach. This requires reviewing civil drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, addenda, site conditions, and bid requirements, then building a clear plan for how the work will be performed safely, efficiently, and profitably.
The right candidate must be able to think through means and methods, not just produce numbers. This includes understanding sequencing, access, production rates, equipment selection, trucking, material handling, disposal, unsuitable soils, rock, dewatering, utility conflicts, and other real-world field constraints.
You will present estimates to leadership with full confidence in your numbers, supported by clear assumptions, takeoff backup, vendor/subcontractor quotes, and a defensible approach. This is not a "black box" estimating role. We expect you to know exactly how and why your numbers work.
Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities
- Lead the company's earthwork and heavy civil estimating efforts
- Review incoming ITBs/RFPs and help determine which opportunities should be pursued
- Assign, prioritize, and support bids across the estimating team
- Prepare estimates by gathering and reviewing proposals, drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, addenda, and related documents
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, site demolition, paving prep, and related civil scopes
- Identify labor, equipment, material, trucking, subcontractor, and schedule requirements
- Analyze project risks, including access, sequencing, soil conditions, rock, groundwater, utility conflicts, haul routes, and disposal requirements
- Review and confirm quotations from vendors, trucking companies, disposal facilities, suppliers, and subcontractors
- Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to develop complete project estimates and proposals
- Analyze labor rates, equipment costs, trucking rates, disposal fees, material pricing, and market conditions
- Consult with clients, engineers, field personnel, project managers, and internal leadership to resolve scope issues and develop bid strategy
- Develop Value Engineering ideas to improve constructability, schedule, and project economics
- Prepare clear bid assumptions, clarifications, exclusions, alternates, and qualifications
- Travel to local and regional project sites to review existing conditions, access, haul routes, logistics, and production expectations
- Support proposal development, scope reviews, turnover meetings, and post-bid follow-up
- Mentor and support other estimators to improve accuracy, consistency, and estimating discipline
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field is preferred; equivalent work experience is acceptable
- Minimum of 10 years' direct experience estimating construction projects, preferably focused on earthwork, utilities, and heavy civil construction
- Related experience in project management, project engineering, field engineering, surveying, or field supervision is a plus
- Strong understanding of production rates, equipment selection, trucking logistics, disposal options, material sourcing, and field sequencing
- Experience leading or mentoring other estimators is strongly preferred
- Experience with Trimble Business Center and Procore or similar is strongly preferred
Skills
- Strong knowledge of estimating fundamentals and typical costs associated with sitework and heavy civil scopes
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans, grading plans, utility plans, profiles, details, geotechnical reports, specifications, and bid documents
- Ability to identify scope gaps, plan conflicts, constructability issues, sequencing concerns, and high-risk bid items
- Strong math and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret detailed but sometimes poorly defined information
- Ability to manage a high volume of bid opportunities without losing accuracy or control
- Assertiveness and self-assurance in presenting and supporting conclusions
- Ability to work under pressure and meet bid deadlines
- Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills
- Ability to compose clear bid clarifications, proposal language, technical documents, and formal correspondence
- Driven and self-motivated problem solver with the ability to take initiative and help expand the division's footprint
- Ability to work independently while leading and supporting a collaborative estimating team
