Position will install new signs and posts, repair or replace damaged signs and remove signs from roadways as needed. Assist in tracking sign inventory and maintaining records. Install, maintain and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, lane closures, etc., in assigned areas using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA, VOSHA, etc.). Follow MUTCD and VDOT safety regulations and practices. Operate and maintain vehicles and equipment (light, medium and heavy duty) to perform roadway maintenance and construction activities. Perform maintenance repair, replacement and preventive maintenance. Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Additional positions may be filled from this applicant pool within 90 days of the closing date.
In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.
Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to maintain records and complete simple paperwork. Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy duty equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations. Skill in mathematics used in carpentry and calculating distance.
Experience with installation and maintenance methods and materials for traffic signs and other transportation warning devices. Experience performing roadway maintenance/construction. Inventory control experience. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

A valid driver’s license, approved safety shoes and frequent daily travel are required. Must be able to obtain Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and DOT medical card within 3 months of employment. Must be able to obtain first aid, CPR, flagging and work zone safety certifications within a reasonable period of employment. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to weather, animals and/or insects, outdoors and in all seasons. Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving records will be verified. Selected applicant must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies, inclement weather and heavy traffic conditions. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
