Job Description

Southwestern Dakotah, Inc. is seeking a qualified SSHO to work in Arizona and California. The SSHO is required to be onsite full time for the duration of the project. The SSHO is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the approved job specific Accident Prevention Plan for the assigned project. The SSHO will monitor and provide technical support on safety for the project site.

Major Responsibilities



  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to secure military installations.

  • Provide initial site-specific safety and health orientations that, at a minimum, covers the project Accident Prevention Plan (APP) and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) to all project personnel, including subcontractors, as the controlling contractor.

  • Hold pre-start safety meetings, toolbox meetings, and safety stand downs on an as needed basis.

  • Ensure that all work activities are performed in accordance with the project-specific APP, AHAs, and applicable EM3851-1 regulations and requirements.

  • Interface with all project staff and subcontracts to formulate corrective actions, as needed.

  • Initiate the reporting of all accidents and near miss events and ensure accurate information is reported.

  • Conduct on-site inspections.

  • Ensure all corrective actions that result from an incident and/or near miss investigations are implemented.

  • Stay up-to date on new safety equipment and PPE recalls.

  • Respond and provide assistance to all emergency calls or situations.

  • Other duties as assigned by companies Vice President and/or Project Manager.


Required Knowledge and Skills



  • Must have technical working knowledge of OSHA and EM 385 1-1.

  • At a minimum must possess technical working of fall protection systems, electrical safety, confined space, excavation and trenching, demolition, LOTO, hazardous communications.

  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Must be flexible and adapt to constant change.

  • Must be able to identify trends and anticipate risks.

  • Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro.


Physical Demands



  • Medium physical workload.

  • Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer screen and extensive reading. Also required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles.

  • Specific physical requirements include, but not limited to, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, walking, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.

  • The worker may be subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

  • The worker may be subject to atmospheric conditions, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, or poor ventilation.

Special Requirements



  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • Must have a clean driving record


Minimum Education/Experience



  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Minimum experience 5 years in Construction Health and Safety, preferably on USACE, NAVFAC, US Army, or USAF facilities


Professional Certificates



  • EM385 1-1 40-hour construction safety hazard awareness certificate

  • 10 Hour OSHA card and or certificate

  • 40 Hour OSHA card and or certificate
