Job Duties


At VDOT, we are driven by service, safety, innovation and commitment. We’re seeking highly skilled Specialty Construction Operators with a drive to improve and maintain infrastructure to join our Chesterfield Residency Specialty Crew.

Selected candidates will work as a part of a team to perform a combination of highly skilled maintenance equipment operations, preventative maintenance, and heavy manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance. Equipment operation includes but is not limited to backhoes, excavators, tractors, dump trucks, pavers, rollers, and similar equipment. Will perform various roadway construction activities to include pipe installations/drainage work, paving, and concrete placement. You will respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions. VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations. Position located at the Chester Area Headquarters.

Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications


• Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
• Demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter
• Ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
• Skill to pour and finish concrete, concrete structures can include, sidewalk, curb and gutter, drop inlets, headwalls, etc.
• Skill to build forms for concrete structures
• Ability to lay asphalt to appropriate grade for small projects. projects could include, pipe replacement, shoulder wedges, and typical patches


Additional Considerations


• Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements
• Experience in roadway maintenance and construction
• Experience forming and finishing concrete
• Experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation
• Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
• Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up
• Flagging certification
• High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.


Special Instructions


Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. NOTE: Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete the Intermediate Work Zone course and obtain a DEQ Land Disturber Certification within 6 months of employment.

VDOT is an emergency response agency. This position is essential requiring you to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.
