Job Duties


VDOT’s Petersburg Residency is looking for Sign Crew Supervisor to plan, schedule, oversee and perform the installation, maintenance, repair and removal of roadway signs and traffic control devices for an assigned geographical area, including supervision of staff and inventory management. This position will serve as team member to the Petersburg Residency’s four AHQs that perform a variety of simple to complex roadway maintenance activities. The successful candidate will supervise a crew, providing technical guidance to crew members performing maintenance activities and equipment operation.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Ability to compile data, prepare reports and maintain records

  • Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Work Area Protection Manual (WAPM) and similar regulations.

  • Ability to perform manual labor.

  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications

  • Safety shoes required

  • Ability to supervise the work of others to include performance management.

  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

  • Experience in sign installation, maintenance and repair.



Additional Considerations



  • Experience managing inventory

  • CDL

  • Experience supervising the work of others

  • Experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repair. Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using MUTCD or similar regulations

  • Basic tree cutting and chainsaw operator

  • Experience in emergency operations, e.g. snow, ice, storms, accidents, etc.

  • Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety

  • CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) combined course.
