As a Supervisor - Traffic Operations, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

In this supervisory position, you will:
*Supervise crews and provide technical guidance in the installation and maintenance of pavement markings, pavement messages, roadway signs, and other traffic control devices.
*Prepare and maintain documentation, develop schedules, plan work, and determine resources needed.
*Review requests and field conditions to estimate repair costs. Order supplies and maintain inventory.
*Gather field data and prepare drawings and/or sketches
*Lead and perform maintenance of equipment, including pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
*Provide traffic control support for maintenance operations by installing and removing traffic signs, and other warning devices.
*Lead crews in setting up work zones, perform traffic control and detours, and focus on workplace safety.
*Operate specialized equipment used in pavement operations.
*Conduct on-the-job training and provide feedback on job performance.
*You will work during emergencies that block roads such as traffic accidents and storm debris. You will provide traffic control and perform activities necessary to reopen the roads.
*During severe weather, you will prepare for events, and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12 hours and may include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours.

Minimum Qualifications


*Valid driver's license required at time of hire. Must obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
*Knowledge of sign installation standards and material characteristics.
*Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
*Skill in the installation and maintenance of roadway signs (both metal and wood structures).
*Skill in the operation, maintenance, methods, and procedures of specialized pavement marking
equipment and materials.
*Skill in the installation of pavement messages and markings (thermoplastic and painted).
*Skill in the operation and maintenance of handheld and power tools and equipment used for traffic operations.
*Experience leading or supervising others and providing technical direction and guidance.
*Basic familiarization for MUTCD
*Basic computer experience.
*Basic familiarization with inventory practices


Additional Considerations


*Current possession of CDL
*Experience in pavement marking, stripping, and messaging operations.
*Ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials, and equipment
needed to accomplish the job.
*Ability to complete reports and records.
*Intermediate Work Zone Certification

Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, and terrain, and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift to 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.

Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified before employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles before receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
