VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has an exciting an opportunity available in its Planning Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Transportation Planning Specialist vacancy. This position serves as an analyst, and coordinates with a variety of entities on complex transportation planning activities and programs. Additionally, they conduct complex technical analyses to support the program.
Required skills for job & position:
• Considerable knowledge of transportation planning and traffic engineering principles, practices, and procedures
• Ability to organize and analyze transportation data
• Ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and complete multiple assignments within scheduled timeframes
• Demonstrated ability to apply transportation planning principles and practices to a variety of complex projects
• Skill in the use of computers and software application
• Skill and ability to positively interact with employees, citizens, and government officials
• Demonstrated knowledge of traffic analysis procedures and techniques
• Ability to manage financial resources
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation planning and land use regulations, procedures, and policies
• Ability to evaluate, develop and maintain innovative solutions for transportation planning and mobility initiatives
• Ability to focus individuals and teams on goal-oriented solutions while demonstrating sensitivity to how people and organizations function
Minimum Qualifications
• Demonstrated ability to apply transportation planning principles and practices to a variety of complex projects
• Ability to evaluate, develop, maintain innovative solutions for transportation planning and mobility initiatives
• Experience applying transportation planning and traffic engineering principles, practices, and procedures
• Knowledge of federal, state, local transportation planning, land use regulations, procedures, and policies
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and complete multiple assignments within scheduled timeframes
• Skill and ability to positively interact with employees, citizens, and government officials
• Ability to manage financial resources
Additional Considerations
• A combination of training, experience, or education in transportation planning, urban planning, or related field desired
• Experience in long-range transportation planning to include forecasting, transportation studies and traffic analyses
• Experience as liaison with diverse groups, e.g. government officials, special interest groups, citizens, etc.
• Experience using planning and traffic engineering software, e.g. Highway Capacity Software and Synchro Software
• Certified Planner with American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
