Job Description

Coordinate and schedule vessel crews to ensure ferries are properly manned in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Provide Operational Support and customer services. Perform special duties as assigned.



How you will contribute:


  • Job Safety : Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying workplace hazards and making suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws, and procedures. Ensure equipment is used properly and safely. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.

  • Passenger Assistance and Vessel : Provide information and assistance to public when needed. Provide obvious and positive directions to vehicle operators as they board and or depart ferry. Serve as vessel security officer responsible for making frequent and thorough safety and security inspections on the ferry. Take necessary action within the trained abilities to mitigate violations.

  • Perform duties as assigned. :

  • Staffing Ferry Crews and Public Relations : Prepare and maintain duty schedules for all staff. Ensure appropriate changes and updates are made to crew assignments as necessary ensuring no missed trips. Serve as operator for all incoming telephone calls. Serve as Ferry Crew Member when required to keep vessels operating. Ensure a continuing program of positive public relations with ferry users.

  • Supervise Facilities : Coordinate slip assignments for fueling maintenance and lay-vessels. Respond to emergencies on or near Scotland Wharf. Conduct daily air monitoring aboard all vessels. Assist vessels with traffic control during commuter and heavy traffic hours. Assist with emergencies on the ferries. Perform other duties as assigned to maintain the safety, cleanliness and overall operation of the ferry and facility.

  • Minimum Qualifications:


  • Ability to coordinate specific job duties with crew members.

  • Ability to respond to emergency operations when necessary.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Skill in basic computer operation.

  • Valid driver's license desired.


  • Additional Considerations:


  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Watercraft Operations, or related field desired.

  • Experience as a sailor or marine and as a VDOT Watercraft Crew Member desired.

  • Marine Radio Operators Permit desired.
