Job Duties
We are seeking individuals interested in joining our Verona Bridge team with ability to perform carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, metal work, equipment operation (e.g. dump truck, loader, backhoe) and manual labor. As a crew member of the bridge repair and construction worker team, you will:
Position can be physically demanding, requiring work over, in, and around water and scaffolding at various heights and in harsh weather conditions.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is considered essential, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Minimum Qualifications
⢠Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
⢠Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
⢠Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
⢠Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
⢠Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
⢠Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions.
⢠Ability to perform carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
⢠Learn and perform in the safe operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
⢠Safety shoes required.
Preferred Qualifications:
⢠Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
⢠Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
⢠Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing.
⢠Experience fabricating or welding steel components.
⢠Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
⢠Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
