General Purpose

Umyuaq Consulting Group, LLC provides community relations, strategic communications, safety outreach, and geographic information systems (GIS) support for environmental remediation and munitions response projects for government clients. The Community Relations Specialist I position requires a detail-oriented researcher able to prepare accurate, written summaries from historical documents, environmental reports, online research, and GIS and census data.  The job also entails providing telephone support at an on-site information center and assisting with other activities, as assigned.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent research and writing skills and be able to thrive in a team environment.  All phases of the work involve feedback on performance and work quality, and require flexibility and responsiveness to the frequently changing requirements of a government consulting business.

Bristol welcomes applicants from various educational backgrounds for this position, including Environmental Science, Legal Studies, Social Sciences, History, and English. The candidate should anticipate travel.   

Major Responsibilities

  1. Identify and synthesize key information from historical documents, environmental reports, U.S. Census data, GIS data, maps, and the internet to prepare written reports with citations and other materials in accordance with both internal standards and client regulations.
  2. Fact check and verify proper names and titles, references, citations, numeric data, figures, illustrations, photographs, and tables.
  3. Adhere to all document preparation standards as detailed in standard operating procedures, templates, and quality control resources.
  4. Utilize an online content management system to prepare client deliverables, share documents internally, and make edits based on quality reviews and input from colleagues.
  5. Develop understanding of key components of explosives safety (3Rs) messaging and the Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) Program, and respond to questions from landowners and other stakeholders calling in the information center.
  6. Support clients with planning and logistics for public meetings and coordinating outreach activities.
  7. Support clients in preparation, planning and logistics for public meetings and coordinating outreach activities.
  8. Assist in the development of materials to present at public meetings.
  9. Facilitate client meetings and provide summaries.
  10. Assist with media support and outreach through information materials, media briefings and provide a media strategy as requested.
  11. Familiar with website support, including site content as well as preparing news articles and other web content as requested.
  12. Achieve annual performance goals in accordance with the above requirements and agreed-upon professional development goals.

Required Knowledge or Skills

  1. Solid research skills as well as demonstrated ability to identify, analyze, and synthesize information from multiple sources. Attention to detail is essential.
  2. Demonstrated ability to present information in a clear and organized manner. Solid understanding of grammar and composition as well as the ability to write and edit to internal, client, and AP standards. Ability to format documents in accordance with templates and style requirements. Writing samples will be requested.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of public affairs and/or media relations.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment that requires collaboration and coordination with others, active participation in discussions, and a positive professional attitude.
  5. Demonstrated ability to complete work on schedule and within budget.
  6. Excellent customer service skills are required for answering telephone calls from the public and others who contact the information center. Previous experience demonstrating these skills should be noted on the resume.
  7. A professional command of spoken and written Spanish, though not required for the position, should be noted on the candidate’s resume.
  8. Competent using all MS Office products and Adobe Acrobat.
  9. Confidence in working simultaneously within various software applications.


Bachelor degree in Public Affairs, Communications, Journalism, English, Environmental Science, Legal Studies, Geography, Social Sciences, History, etc. 
Preferred candidates will have at least three (3) years of prior work experience that reflects the responsibilities, knowledge, and skills required for the position. Experience working with federal agencies helpful, but not required.
