Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportationâs (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce exciting opportunities to serve as part-time Construction Inspector in our NOVA District.

This is an HOURLY/WAGE POSITION, Limited to 1500 hrs per cycle year with an average of 29 hrs per week. No State/Medical benefits provided.

Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:

Construction and Contract Compliance â Ensure construction activities are performed in accordance with contracts, plans and applicable documents to include environmental, erosion and sediment controls, safety, traffic controls, EEO and DBE guidelines, regulations and permits. Ensuring project contract compliance, notify contractors of any non-compliance issues and resolution through documentation. Oversee and perform materials testing to ensure project is constructed to design quality standards. Ensure monthly that all pay items of work performed.

Project Safety and Environmental Compliance â Ensure work zones are properly established and maintained. Ensure project employees and equipment are performing in compliance with safety practices and directives. Monitor erosion and sediment control measures to ensure compliance and appropriate maintenance. Maintain a clean and organized work environment. Practice safe driving and maintain a clean vehicle interior and exterior.

Project Oversight and Documentation â Monitor project schedules, documents and distributes minutes of project and progress meetings. Reviews and maintains project budgets, ensures all submittals for associated work items have approved prior to start of work. Determines support equipment needed for project and ensure proper maintenance, use and return.

Stakeholder Communication â Communicate with VDOT and external support staff. Manage project public relations and respond to public concerns. Proactively notify project support staff and the public of traffic changes, project phase start and finish. Address landowner, business owner, and traveling public concerns regarding project. Coordinate distribution of lane closure notification with Traffic Operations Center, Communications and Residency. Work with contractor to resolve issues.

Minimum Qualifications

Skill in overseeing multiple projects and in determining sound recommendations.

Experience with construction methods, materials, equipment, standards, specifications and terminology.

Experience applying state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO and DBE guidelines and regulations related to transportation construction.

Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry and ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments to construction plans.

Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, construction contracts and other project management documents.

Ability to record and maintain detailed project documentation and prepare reports, forms and correspondence.

Ability to work independently and oversee and provide technical guidance and training to other inspectors.

Ability to resolve routine issues at field level.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public.

Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, as well as computers and software applications.

Valid driverâs license and safety shoes required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a broad range of road and bridge construction inspection activities with a DOT or a DOT consultant inspection firm.

Proficiency in MS Office and Site Manager or other project management software.

Experience overseeing the work of others.

Possession of current certifications and completion of fall protection and confined space training.

High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

Certifications to include Work Zone Traffic Control, Asphalt Concrete Field, Hydraulic Cement Concrete, Soils and Aggregate Compaction, Nuclear Safety and Transportation, Pavement Marking and Guardrail Installation, Storm Water Inspection, DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection, OSHA Safety training courses, First Aid, CPR, and Flagging.

Approved Safety Shoes and other personal protective equipment are required in the performance of duties.

Employees are required to obtain and maintain certifications as a condition of continued employment.

All employees are required to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.

This position requires a fingerprint based Criminal History Background Check, DMV Record Check and Work History Verification with references.

Employees in this position may be required to work on projects located anywhere within the geographic District (Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Arlington Counties, and City of Alexandria) during the course of their employment.

May be required to operate or work in the vicinity of devices containing radioactive materials and emitting low levels of ionizing radiation.

Position requires unrestricted mobility, including, at times, unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain; working at heights and in confined spaces, making visual observations; the ability to stand for long periods of time; the ability to work in a variety of environments affected by, but not limited to, such elements as dust, vapors, heat, and moisture; and the ability to lift 50 lbs.
