Civil Construction Project Superintendent

Plant Construction Company, L.P. has been successful for over 70 years as a General Contractor in the San Francisco Bay Area specializing in Education, Hotel, Residential, Historic Renovation and Redevelopment Projects. We would like to add an experienced Project Superintendent to our team to work within the established culture and guidelines of the Company.

Plant has an immediate need for a Superintendent with civil construction, major structures, underground utilities, highway/roadway, paving, brickwork, joint trench work and other large scale multi-million dollar commercial experience to oversee a 26 acre project site at the historic naval shipyard in San Francisco. 

Position Title:             Project Superintendent
Reports To:                Project Manager / Construction Manager
Supervises:                Field Personnel and all Subcontractors
Location:                   San Francisco, CA
Status:                      Exempt or non-exempt  (This can be a salaried non-union position or an hourly position through the carpenters' union.)                              

Supervisory Responsibilities:

    • Provide leadership and mentoring to field crew through training, planning, delegating, directing and coordinating
    • Represent the Company at all times with professionalism and commitment to quality
    • Resolve employee/union/subcontractor issues as needed
    • Monitor estimated hours versus actual hours and control overtime work
    • Ensure time entries are correctly coded and reported in a timely manner
    • Monitor cost and project schedule making adjustments to manpower, priorities or efficiency to meet budget and schedule requirements
    • Ability to motivate others and work well under pressure
    • Maintain positive customer/client/subcontractor relationships
    • Develop owner and architect confidence through team approach and build relationships
    • Participate in weekly progress meetings with owners/architects/subcontractors
    • Improve personal professional growth and technical education


    • Take full responsibility for all field operations on a daily basis and proper execution of construction work
    • Responsible for accurate vertical and horizontal layout of building and components of the building, setting baselines and checking detailed layout work by trades
    • Knowledgeable of materials, equipment and tools necessary
    • Inventory, protect and return Company tools on time
    • Enforce quality management for work in progress and protect completed work
    • Maintain organized jobsite office and clean jobsite
    • Maintain permits and  conduct inspections
    • Initiate RFI’s and distribute responses
    • Schedule vendor and service department orders and deliveries
    • Properly coordinate subcontractor sequencing of tasks and Plant work to maintain schedule and achieve milestones
    • Verify subcontractor installation of correct work and monitor subcontract field change order requests
    • Lead weekly subcontractor foreman’s meeting
    • Ensure housekeeping to Plant standards is maintained by subcontractors
    • Assist with shop drawing and submittal review
    • Prepare daily field reports
    • Assist Project Management with look ahead schedules
    • Job closeout and as-built documentation
    • Maintain quality control and integrity and excellence until project completion


    • Provide a safe work environment through culture of safety holding each person accountable
    • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA laws
    • Implement Injury Prevention and Illness Program and Safe Work Practices, including 100% usage of Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Support “Clean Site is a Safe Site” ethic with all trades per the Plant Safety program
    • Maintain a good safety record
    • Ideal candidates will already be certified in the following areas: First Aid/CPR, OSHA, Shoring, Excavation, Trenching, Scaffolds, Access Equipment, Ladders, Hoisting Equip, etc.
    • Implementation of public safety


Experience Requirements:

  • Ten years minimum of extensive construction experience at superintendent level required
  • Knowledge regarding all aspects of site work including the ability to read and understand specifications for all crafts and trades
  • Working knowledge of job scheduling, planning, expediting and cost control
  • Experience reading and understanding project drawings, specifications and contract requirements
  • Experience with organizing, coordinating and supervising the work of all subcontractors, including trade work scopes and subcontract review
  • Excellent organizational, managerial, interpersonal and communication skills are required
  • Proven problem-solving ability, initiative and strong analytical skills to foresee and resolve issues using corrective measures
  • Computer skills, such as MSProject, PlanGrid and BIM 360 are preferred
