Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce an opportunity to serve as a part-time/hourly Contract Monitor at our Prince William Residency in our Northern Virginia District. This position does not exceed 1500 hours in a cycle year and is not eligible for any health or leave benefits.

Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:

Monitors the contractorâs performance at the jobsite to include, but not limited to, services such as mowing, tree trimming, tree removal, incidental concrete, and incidental asphalt patching. Maintain communication with contractor foreman/supervisor regarding all services being performed. Ensure services are performed according to all contract requirements. Ensure contractor meets work zone safety and other safety requirements while performing services under contract. Complete contractor performance reports and submit to appropriate staff. Document all contractor performance deficiencies and report to supervisor. Assist the Contract Manager with estimating quantities and preparing and developing future service contracts. Respond to inquiries and concerns regarding contracts.

Snow Removal Operations: Assist in snow removal operations in the Prince William contract section. Assure assigned snow removal and emergency operations are completed in a timely manner and that contractor performance issues are addressed to supervisor. Review and verify contractor invoices against contract pay items for accuracy.

Minimum Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of roadway construction, maintenance, and repair techniques, practices and equipment.
Ability to monitor and oversee the work of others.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret contracts, road and bridge specifications and associated regulations in highway maintenance.
Ability to collect and analyze data and prepare reports.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, lifting up to 50lbs.
Skill in the use of computers and software programs.
Ability to obtain Work Zone Safety and Flagging certification within 6-12 months of employment.
Safety shoes required.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and use sound judgement in making decisions.
Ability to communicate effectively with others orally and in writing and to resolve contract issues and inquiries proactively.

Preferred Qualifications:

Possession of Work Zone Safety and Flagging certification.
Experience in roadway maintenance, construction and equipment operations.
Experience monitoring and inspecting contractors or overseeing the work of others.
Completed VDOT Contract Monitor Training.
