DevSecOps Automation Engineer

Overview

The candidate will take on a dual role as software engineer and maintainer, aiding in the creation of a secure hardened operating system for a National Security space ground systems development and operations initiative. In so doing, the candidate aids in the building of the most secure, effective, and interoperable tactical command and control experience that will further the progress of the United States in winning a war that extends into space. The Automation Engineer will work in a larger team of engineers supporting other services, components, and integration activities for this software-centric satellite ground system.

Experience in automated configuration and provisioning of cloud OS level infrastructure is required. The candidate will have demonstrated experience in delivering and maintaining operating system environments used by developers and will have deployed applications in private datacenter and public/commercial cloud computing infrastructures.

Responsibilities include

  • Delivering automation to enable the construction and verification of OS images in commercial and private cloud environments
  • Supporting integration of these images into customer end systems, including air-gapped development and operations environments
  • Survey and adoption of improved upstream sources
  • Developer level requirements and documentation/training, and automated testing
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge regarding Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Utilize best of breed automation tools to automation all aspects of day to day operations
  • Understand Cloud platforms and architectures to include the automation of creating and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure
  • Working knowledge of VMWare and/or OpenStack
  • Solid scripting skillset in PowerShell and/or bash to perform common tasks and aid in building of automation
  • Apply and validate DISA STIGs, CIS Baselines, NIST guidelines, and other relevant security baselines to Linux, Windows, and cloud infrastructure
  • Provide tier 3 support for hardened operating systems
  • Develop documentation for tier 1 and tier 2 help desk support
  • Write applications in high level programming languages
  • Implement automated testing for all aspects of the development environment
  • Ensure all systems security operations and maintenance activities are properly documented and updated as necessary

Position Responsibilities

  • Utilize best of breed automation tools to automate all aspects of day to day operations
  • Understand cloud platforms and architectures to include the automation of creating and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure
  • Working knowledge of VMWare and/or OpenStack
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge regarding Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Solid scripting skillset in PowerShell and/or Unix shell to perform common tasks and aid in building of automation

  • Ensure all systems security operations and maintenance activities are properly documented and updated as necessary

Minimum Security Clearance

  • Ability to acquire and maintain DoD Top Secret Security Clearance (or used with the past 2 years)
  • US Citizenship is required.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • At least 5 years of progressive DevSecOps experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience automating, measuring, and optimizing system performance and processes.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant Windows and Linux experience
  • Experience with DevOps tools: Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, Test Automation, Docker, Packer
  • Proficient with Git source code versioning
  • Able to develop software using a modern programming language (Python, Groovy, etc.)
  • Familiarity with automation of security-relevant OS configurations, frameworks, and verification mechanisms including GPO, host firewall
  • Experience designing and implementing deployment and maintenance of public Internet and local network package registries and repositories (yum/rpm, WSUS, docker registry)
  • Deployment of applications into mixed platform environments (AWS, VMWare, OpenStack)
  • Solid PowerShell and Unix shell scripting experience
  • Ability to utilize best of breed automation tools to automate day to day operations (Jenkins, Ansible, HashiCorp tools)
  • Understanding of automated testing tools and processes
  • Familiarity with agile process tools (e.g., Atlassian's suite including Jira/Confluence) to manage and document development
  • Assist in the training of help desk personnel
  • Ability to communicate complex information, concepts, or ideas in a confident and well-organized manner through verbal, written, and/or visual means.
  • Ability to produce technical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DoD TS/SSBI or SCI Clearance
  • At least 10 years of progressive DevSecOps experience.
  • At least 10 years of experience automating, measuring, and optimizing system performance and processes.
  • At least 5 years developing hybrid cloud and container-based applications, using automation tooling, standardization, agile disciplines and concepts such as "infrastructure as code".
  • Working knowledge of security and auditing cloud infrastructures such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure
  • Knowledge of cyber threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Knowledge of secure configuration management techniques. (e.g., Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), cybersecurity best practices on cisecurity.org).
  • Knowledge of vulnerability information dissemination sources (e.g., alerts, advisories, errata, and bulletins).
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field or comparable work experience
  • Travel - 10%

  • Bachelor of Science in cybersecurity, information assurance, computer science, computer engineering, or related discipline
