WSP is currently initiating a search for a Director, Mechanical Engineer for our Richmond, VA office.  We work closely with architects and owners from around the world on large, complex projects with a focus on sustainability and energy performance of the built environment. 
 
This role will actively participate in the full project cycle with a focus on healthcare projects from the design phase through the final construction close-out. Our Engineers work on high quality, high-profile, national and international projects with our practice providing design services for over 30 million square feet of medical facilities.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the mechanical design on a variety of project types, lead teams, and directly interface with the client
  • Actively participate in the full project cycle from the design phase through the final construction close-out
  • Assist in the management of the department and the office including training and mentoring junior staff
  • Be the main point of contact for our clients and represent the team at project meetings
  • Manage multiple design projects of various scale through concept, SD, DD and the CA phases; project types include healthcare, science and technology, commercial, residential, hospitality, and institutional projects
  • Provide technical expertise for mechanical systems
  • Quality control review of all project design and documentation
  • Prepare technical reports and specifications
  • Assist with marketing/proposal efforts and proposal presentations
  • Responsible for the management of project finances including:
  • Preparing project budgets and monitoring compliance with time/schedule deadlines
  • Planning and obtaining additional work authorizations as required for scope changes
  • Accountable for the profitability of the projects managed

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical/ HVAC Engineering or related discipline
  • 12+ years of experience designing mechanical systems for the built environment
  • Excellent engineering skills (conceptual and inter-disciplinary), the ability to work with our clients to determine/study different system types, and provide applicable pros and cons for each along with appropriate spatial requirements
  • Hands-on knowledge and experience with Revit and AutoCAD
  • Excellent communication skills, a self-starter/team player, and motivated and able to manage/direct others (internally and externally)
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Preferred Qualifications:
  • P.E. license
  • LEED AP
  • Interest in taking on leadership responsibilities within the office under the operations manager and office director.  This could include process improvements, finances, and/or training.
