Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District, is seeking individuals interested in joining our team who are able to coordinate visual and operational inspections of the mechanical or hydraulic components of movable bridges. Provide technical guidance and support related to the construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects for the functional systems of movable bridges.

Core Responsibilities include:

Inspection â Coordinate routine visual and operational inspections of the mechanical or hydraulic components and their structural supports of movable bridges. Evaluate damage or mechanical malfunctions affecting the operation of movable bridges and provide assessments and recommendations.

Inspection Reports â Prepare technical inspection reports, evaluate and assign component condition ratings and make recommendations for maintenance and rehabilitation. Determine and provide prioritization of recommended corrective action.

Technical Guidance and Support â Provide technical guidance and support related to the construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects for the functional systems of movable bridges. Develop effective and economical recommendations to respond to mechanical problems or mechanical related maintenance injuries.

Inspection â Coordinate routine visual and operational inspections of the mechanical components of movable bridges statewide in accordance with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Movable Bridge Inspection, Evaluation, and Maintenance Manual Second Edition 2017.

Technical guidance and support â Develop minimum life cycle cost recommendations relative to mechanical engineering.

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience performing visual and operational inspections of mechanical components of swing-span, vertical-lift and bascule type movable bridges.
  • Experience applying mechanical engineering principles used in the design, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of movable bridges.
  • Experience reading and interpreting complex reports, plans, specifications or schematics for mechanical components of movable bridges.
  • Ability to inspect work in progress for compliance to plans, special provisions, specifications, schematics, applicable codes, standards and best practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to include preparing detailed technical reports for mechanical components of movable bridges.
  • Ability to physically perform field inspections, work at heights, over water, in confined spaces, and to use all required equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree.
  • FHWA-NHI-130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges.
  • Experience with the inspection and troubleshooting of mechanical components for movable bridges.
