Job Duties
VDOT is seeking a dynamic self-motivated individual to lead the effort of improving traffic signal system activities by actively participating in the continual effort of upgrading and expanding traffic signal systems for the Central Region Operations. You will evaluate, recommend, and perform modifications to existing signal configurations and lead development of new signal operation systems; design and/or review signal operation system coordination, including phasing and timing plans, utilizing Synchro and other traffic software; and ensure signal system timing activities are conducted in collaboration with Traffic Engineering, Traffic Signal Maintenance Operations as well as other divisions. The position will monitor traffic signal operation systems using computer applications as well as field observations; monitor system functions and performance using time-based reports and critical alarms; and evaluate critical alarms for needed actions to make necessary correctional adjustments to signal parameters in order to mitigate specific situations. Maintain/update databases pertaining to signal operation systems and isolated signalized intersection timing, phasing and inventory. You will coordinate with roadway projects that will impact signal operations; review/analyze traffic impact data using Synchro, HCS, Tru Traffic and other traffic analysis/simulation models; and review VDOT, land use development and locality roadway improvement projects impacting VDOT traffic signal operations. Coordinate VDOT traffic signal timings with local jurisdictions in District; maintain contact with applicable local agency representatives and develop a plan for establishing coordinated signal timings; and oversee VDOT actions needed to design, implement, and maintain inter-jurisdictional timing plans. Investigate customer generated work orders and prepare responses for management review, both internal and external, regarding traffic signal operation systems, signal timing and other signal operational issues. You will develop incident management plans, as well as respond to emergency signal timing change requests due to roadway shutdown. In addition, the position will assist with the region-wide effort of the deployment of the new McCain Controllers with D4 firmware and be responsible for managing both old and new systems throughout the region.
