Job Duties

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Salem District is seeking a Mechanic for our Equipment Repair shop. This position will perform a wide variety of general maintenance and repair functions on VDOTâs overall fleet

In this role one will promote and practice safe work habits while performing basic repairs and services on light, heavy duty, and diesel trucks; road construction and maintenance equipment; hydraulic systems; and electrical components.

Specific Responsibilities will include:

Diagnose and Repair â Diagnose, repair and complete basic tasks on a variety of equipment types such as tires, brakes, lighting, pumps and valves. Use basic scan tools to read and clear check engine light codes.

Preventative Maintenance - Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment according to the preventative maintenance schedule and guidelines.

Maintain Documents and Records - Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate documents and work orders in computer system. Perform time and leave entry in appropriate systems.

Perform Manual Labor â Perform manual labor to complete assigned tasks. Complete assigned tasks and projects as instructed.

Minimum Qualifications

â¢Skill in performing light vehicle services and repairs.
â¢Knowledge of general shop procedures.
â¢Ability to perform manual labor.
â¢Skill in the use of computers for research, navigation and communication.
â¢Ability to read, understand, and apply information from service and equipment manuals.
â¢Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
â¢Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
â¢Ability to record and maintain data in computer systems.
â¢Safety shoes required.
â¢Valid driverâs license.

Preferred Qualifications:

â¢Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
â¢Experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
â¢Experience with performing light vehicle services and repairs.
â¢Ability to obtain a VSP State Inspectors license within 2 years of employment.
â¢Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers license.
â¢Knowledge of general welding practices.
â¢Knowledge of laptop and/or hand-held diagnostic programs .

Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Valid Driverâs License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
