Job Duties
As a Highway Maintenance Crew Member, you will:
Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway patching. Specific tasks include installing culvert pipes, grading gravel roads, hauling gravel and debris, roller patching, and a host of other duties needed to maintain Virginiaâs roads.
Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar kettles, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc.
This position is required to work during emergencies, with VDOT determining when you would be required to report. You will respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris to provide traffic control and perform maintenance activities to reopen the road. During severe weather, you will prepare for, and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12-hours in length, and may include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours.
Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection techniques. Safety is a our number one focus, you are encouraged to identify workplace safety hazards and make recommendations for improvements.
Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
