Job Duties

This position is eligible for VDOT's Employee Referral Bonus Program. Candidates must have a minimum of a Commercial Learners Permit prior to being hired. Preference will be given to candidates who already have a current CDL. Position transports and provides on-the-job training and direction to inmate crews performing roadway maintenance activities. When not overseeing crews, position will perform a variety of routine and emergency roadway maintenance activities to include heavy manual labor and operation of specialized equipment. Additional vacancies in the Appomattox Residency may be filled from this applicant pool within 90 days of the closing date.

In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT and other state agency employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials and work methods. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs related to roadway construction and maintenance. Ability to plan work schedules and assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish tasks. Ability to complete reports and records, provide technical direction and guidance to a variety of laborers, and perform heavy manual labor. Skill in operating and maintaining light, medium and heavy-duty equipment, as well as hand and power tools. Valid driverâs license. Must be able to possess and carry firearms.

Additional Considerations

Experience in inmate supervision. Possession of Department of Corrections (DOC) inmate and security and firearms certifications. Valid Commercial Driverâs License. Experience performing emergency operations to include snow removal, storm damage and accident clean-up.

Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to the outdoors, weather in all seasons, animals and insects. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Must be able to obtain DOC inmate security and firearms certifications, as well as First Aid, CPR, work zone safety and flagger certifications as soon as training is made available. Must be able to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment. Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving record will be verified prior to employment. Selected applicant must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Requires approved safety shoes. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies and inclement weather to include nights, weekends and holidays. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
