WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Consultant, Transportation Planner for our Chicago, Illinois office. We have an immediate opening for a highly skilled, experienced and motivated multimodal planner. The Supervising Planner is expected to serve as a deputy project manager, assist with various types of multi-modal projects including roads, transit and rail.  This position will work closely with planning and environmental staff in Illinois and across WSPs central region to research, analyze, document and present information related to various types of transportation projects. Additional key responsibilities of this position include helping to manage projects and tasks, mentoring staff, building and maintaining client relationships, and participating in business development activities to help achieve the sales, revenue, and project delivery goals in Illinois, which is part of WSPs Central Region.
The successful candidate must be a team player and a self-starter, demonstrate strong analytical, communication, collaboration, technical, supervisory and business skills, appreciate a diverse array of project work over time, and have a demonstrated working knowledge of land use issues and jurisdictional authority, roadway, transit, freight, and rail project studies, as well as the associated planning and implementation processes for muncipalities, counties, the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, Metra, Pace, the CTA and the RTA.   
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assisting with project management and successfully delivering projects, including staffing, budget and quality
  • Collecting, analyzing and interpreting analytic and written data (i.e. land use, freight, economic, demographic, fiscal, legal, natural resources, etc.)
  • Composing correspondence and reports for project activities
  • Technical writing and report preparation
  • Participating and coordinating public and stakeholder public meetings and public participation/outreach processes
  • Developing strong working relationships with clients and teaming partners
  • Managing and mentoring staff
  • Collaborating extensively with other business units within Illinois and WSP's Central Region for business development and project delivery

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience in transportation and land use planning and policy work
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Geography, Public Policy, or a related discipline is required;
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, municpal, county, regional and statewide planning processes
  • Knowledge and demonstarted use of freight data
  • Ability to effectively present and communicate ideas orally and in written form
  • Critical, strategic and creative thinking skills
  • Computer skills (i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS)
  • Ability to gather, organize and analyze data critically and develop supporting information and reports
  • Understanding of project administration and management
  • Possess a high level of energy, enthusiasm, and positive attitude
  • Must be a team player
  • Ability to travel minimally/on occasion
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active involvement in Illinois planning/transportation-related organizations (APA, ACEC, WTS, or similar professional organizations)
  • Familiarity with MPO planning processes
  • NEPA experience
  • Urban design experience
  • Freight planning and policy experience
