VDOT Staunton District Toms Brook AHQ is seeking a qualified Roadway Maintenance Operator to perform a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance and manual labor. The qualified candidate will:
-Perform equipment operation, which includes but is not limited to, backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment.
-Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee; must be willing to work outside of normal work hours during emergency conditions.
-Perform manual labor and traffic control activities.

Minimum Qualifications

-Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
-Demonstrated experience in equipment operation and performing preventive maintenance.
-Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs.
-Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools and light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
-Perform heavy manual labor.
-Ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions.
-Valid Commercial Driverâs License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements preferred at time of hire, but must be obtained within 11 months of employment.
-Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
-Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

-High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
-Experience in the maintenance and/or construction of roadways.
-Prefer CDL with appropriate endorsements at time of hire.

References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Selected applicant, if a current CDL holder, must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screening. Fingerprint-based background check required. Requires approved safety shoes.

Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies, inclement weather, and heavy traffic conditions.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
