Job Duties
VDOT is seeking a highly qualified Maintenance Supervisor for the Front Royal Area Headquarters. This position is responsible for the supervision and training of work crews performing a wide variety of maintenance and repair activities on roadways and surrounding right of way. Specifically, the qualified candidate will:
-Develop and plan work schedules, assigns daily tasks, and monitor work performed to ensure safe, efficient and timely completion of projects.
-Inspect and document performance of contractors to ensure contract compliance.
-Review road conditions to determine repair needs and ensures work is completed.
Investigate and respond to complaints.
-Promote, demonstrate and maintain compliance with all safety requirements including work zone traffic controls and set-up.
-Conduct on-the-job training and recommend training needs to Superintendent.
-Manage employee performance by communicating expectations, feedback, and performance appraisals.
-Complete daily work reports.
-Assist with inventory management and back up Inventory Manager as needed.
-Perform maintenance activities that require a license or certification.
-Operate equipment and perform manual labor.
-Serve as a shift supervisor during emergencies.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
⢠Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
⢠Ability to provide technical direction and guidance to skilled, semi-skilled and manual laborers.
⢠Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
⢠Knowledge of inventory and budgeting practices.
⢠Ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the job.
⢠Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs related to roadway construction and maintenance.
⢠Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand held and power tools.
⢠Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices with ability to supervise others to include performance management.
⢠Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
⢠Knowledge and application of work zone safety, traffic controls and flagging operations to include the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
⢠Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
⢠Skill in operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and emergency operations.
⢠Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
⢠Ability to compile and analyze data; complete reports and records, requiring business, English and math skills.
⢠Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures.
⢠Skill in operating computers and navigating software applications.
⢠Demonstrated ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the job.
LICENSES \u0026 CERTIFICATIONS:
⢠Commercial Driver' License (CDL)
⢠Basic Tree Cutting \u0026 Chainsaw Operator
⢠Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
⢠CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
⢠Flagger
Minimum Qualifications
⢠High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
⢠Experience in roadway maintenance and, or construction activities. Experience leading or supervising work crews.
⢠Valid driver's license.
⢠Skilled in the use of computers and software applications.
⢠Ability to perform manual labor.
⢠Ability to direct, evaluate and train others.
⢠Safety shoes required.
⢠Skilled in operating and maintaining light to heavy trucks and equipment.
⢠Considerable knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
⢠Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
⢠Knowledge of inventory practices and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
⢠DCR Erosion and Sediment Control certification.
⢠Experience supervising others and evaluating performance.
⢠Experience planning schedules and assigning manpower.
⢠Ability to gather data, conduct research and create reports.
⢠Experience overseeing emergency operations activities including snow removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.
⢠Inventory management experience.
