The Transportation and Infrastructure business of WSP is seeking a NYC Deputy Area Manager - Project Operations (Transportation & Infrastructure) based in their New York office. The successful candidate will report to the NYC Area Manager and will be responsible for overseeing the proposal and project operations and responsible for driving successful project delivery in the office.
The successful candidate will have proven experience in managing the commercial side of engineering projects and pursuits, including negotiations, fee and contract reviews. WSP is looking for a candidate with good interpersonal skills from presenting project status to executives and supporting proposal and project teams to ensure project success. The Deputy Area Manger will also be expected to meet with clients and attend client presentations on behalf of WSP.
The Transportation & Infrastructure business in the NYC employs over 400 staff and an ability to engage and invest in the people in the office will be critical together with an ability to communicate and work with other WSP businesses and offices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and take part in internal commercial reviews and approvals for fee proposals
  • Assess contracts/subcontracts and engage with legal, subcontracts, finance and compliance to document and propose changes
  • Aggressively negotiate terms where appropriate.
  • Document unique and pertinent terms that require special attention during contract execution
Proposal Reviews
  • Assess proposed hours and costs against scopes and technical approaches
  • Review for gaps and redundancies
  • Challenge pursuit leads and technical leads on assumptions
  • Establish appropriate compensation terms based on contracts types and clients
  • Highlight commercial pitfalls for Project Managers to manage
  • Engage and lead cost proposals for major pursuits
  • Develop negotiation strategies and participate in contract negotiations
  • Represent the company and make financial decisions
  • Present and defend cost proposals
  • Recognize client limitations and account for them
Project Reviews
  • Work with other WSP staff on overall project review scope and intent
  • Identify high-risk projects and follow up on status
  • Assess delivery/quality performance
  • Assess commercial performance
  • Assess financial performance
  • Assess internal management and identify if systems need to be updated
  • Identify shortcomings/shortfalls
  • Support Project Manager in developing and implementing mitigation strategies
  • Lead deep-dive reviews for high impact projects
Major Projects
  • Provide guidance to major projects particularly during start-up
  • Support Project Managers and project operations lead during project execution
  • Reconcile project performance/financials into Oracle
  • Support and negotiate change orders as necessary
Financial Performance/Operations
  • In support of the Area Manager:
  • Discuss project performance issues and mitigations with area and executive leadership
  • Perform budget forecasting
  • Develop yearly strategic budget plan
  • Margin (Setting proper margin goals, and assessing erosion)
  • Manage Funding and Revenue
  • Manage DSO and mitigation strategies
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives to improve financial performance
  • Maintain client salary rosters
Business Development
  • Represent company during presentations as required
  • Participate in frequent industry events events/engagement
  • Meet with potential teaming partners
  • Engage in client Drop-ins / Feedback / Issue Resolution meetings
  • Meet with clients to discuss upcoming work,
  • Solicit feedback on company/project performance and
  • Discuss issues/problems as describe by clients
  • Engage in mentoring staff
  • Assess and recommend Project Managers and Deputy Project Managers for projects and pursuits
  • Develop and lead/support Project Manager / Deputy Project Manager training
  • Support/lead space planning for the New York Office
  • Collaborate with young professional groups in office
