Principal Mechanical Engineer

Our engineers perform complex design and analysis, and construction inspections, fabrication and assembly inspections in shop, witness testing and develop detailed specifications for transit projects.You can expect to reviewmechanical stress and deflection analyses, review design calculations, develop/review mechanical specifications, construction plans and specs, geometric layouts and material quantity calculations.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Completes a variety of assignments such as drawings, specifications, reports, and other materials suitable for procurement and construction purposes.
  • Prepares standard engineering calculations, material quality takeoffs, estimates, and other associated design documentation
  • Performs site surveys of existing facilities for as-build generation, rehabilitation designs, and construction support of new facilities. Adherence to a Zero-Incident safety goal is expected.
  • Ensures compliance of design with all applicable codes and regulations, providing the seal and signature of the professional engineer when required by statute or contract.
  • Prepares material/equipment specifications and purchase requisitions; reviews supplier data; witnesses shop tests, assists with assessing supplier manufacturing capabilities.
  • Reviews small and portions of larger supplier drawing submittals and assists in performing technical bid analyses.
  • Prepares and issues specifications, datasheets, and other construction documents.
  • Provides input and technical guidance to CAD Designer/Drafters, Designers, and lower-level Engineers working on the same project.
  • Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 4-year degree in Mechanical Engineering and 10-15 years of related work experience. In addition, a professional engineer license is required with the ability to obtain reciprocity and/or comity in additional states.
  • In addition to the above credentials, experience with industrial, transit, or commercial facilities is essential. Experience in the use of BIM, CAD, scheduling software, or file management software is a plus.
  • Experience in the design and specification of a wide variety of mechanical systems is preferred. Mechanical systems should include one or more of the following: HVAC systems, chillers, boilers, steam systems, fans, compressors, cooling towers, and other related systems. Plumbing systems include one or more of the following: domestic water distribution, storm and sanitary systems, pumping, condensate disposal, and other related systems.
  • The candidate shall be capable of working in a self-directed manner with minimal oversight. Candidate should have experience supervising a design group of CAD Designer/Drafters, Designers, and lower-level Engineers in the production of multiple projects or sub-tasks simultaneously.
  • Further experience in any of the following specialty areas is beneficial but not required: LEED and/or Envision certification, energy modeling, vertical transportation, fire suppression systems, tunnel ventilation, material handling equipment, building management systems, supervisory control and data acquisition, electrical power distribution, natural gas piping and distribution.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:

Knowledge of HVAC design principles, plumbing design, specification development, and report development is required. Ability to utilize standard office automation software is expected. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with management, client, and other stakeholders. Working knowledge of REVIT, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Trane Trace, MathCAD, and/or other software packages typically associated with engineering is beneficial.
