Job Description:

The Operational Medicine Program focuses on emergent militarily relevant issues that could be immediately deployed onto the battlefield. Recent efforts have concentrated on elucidating the potential effects of early and prolonged aeromedical transport on combat injured casualties. The En Route Care Department, in combination with the Undersea Medicine Department, has the capability, equipment and scientific/technical expertise to evaluate the effects of long-range aeromedical evacuation in both large (swine) and small (rats, mice) animals. In addition, other efforts encompassed in this program evaluate operationally relevant devices and methods for caring for combat casualties either in the field or en route to definitive care.

This position will provide technical support to investigators for in-vivo studies of traumatic brain injury, polytrauma, and other injury models in accordance with IACUC approved animal protocols in large and small animals. Duties will include performing organization of animal records, animal handling, surgical procedures (including but not limited to anesthesia monitoring, animal fluid collection and processing, physiological monitoring, data acquisition and recording, and intensive post-operative care of animals), laboratory processing of animal samples and all data analysis.

Additional duties will include entering and analyzing experimental data into Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, GraphPad Prism and SPSS or other software, and other duties as assigned. Individual must possess excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, time management, and computer skills. Previous experience with laboratory and animals required.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 80-90% of time

1. Assisting with protocol related technical procedures such as performing surgical and experimental procedures under supervision in support of research studies of traumatic injury, hemorrhagic shock in swine and rats.

2. Provide intensive supportive post-operative care to experimental animals including observation, assessment and administration of experimental treatment in consultation with scientific staff.

3. Experimental data collection and entry into Microsoft Access database and Microsoft Excel (or other).

4. Data processing using Microsoft Excel and other analysis programs.

5. Writing and preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, SOPs, protocols, posters and slide presentations.

6. Laboratory management duties including supply procurement, routine maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, assure compliance with departmental and facility SOP's and policies.

7. Maintenance and operation of medical devices and software pertinent to animal experiments and protocols.

8. Correspond with other teams and departments to schedule surgeries, procedures, and equipment usage and maintenance.


1. Assisting with/or performing basic laboratory procedures (e.g. cell processing, ELISA, BCA assays, FACS, histology, flow cytometry, microscopy).

2. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of a bachelors in the Biological Sciences, Animal Sciences or similar fields.

  • Prior, hands-on animal research/ surgical experience is required for this position.
